Corsione

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 205 · Postal code: 14020

The name of Corsione turns up as Curseonum in a bull of Pope Adrian IV in 1156, and as Curteseonis a few years later. Since the late Middle Ages the village has stayed gathered inside the walled core still called the Recinto, and it governed itself: the podestà was chosen by the council of the universitas, made up of the local elders, and at the end of his term his accounts were audited. A church of San Cristoforo appears in 1266, but the care of souls belonged to the rector of Santa Maria, the parish church outside the village.

The shield shows, on green, a castle in natural colours with a black gate and two Guelph-battlemented towers, charged with a blue escutcheon bearing a rampant lion and topped by a six-pointed golden star. In 1928 Corsione and neighbouring Villa San Secondo were abolished and joined into one municipality, Villa Corsione; the marriage did not last, and in 1947 the two villages went their separate ways.
