The Latin Cixanum would point, some think, to the estates of a Cixius; others read it as the chiusa of the Rilate valley, a defence of Asti from the north. From 962 the bishop of Asti held it, by will of emperor Otto I; it later became a fief of the lords of Cossombrato, who in 1198 submitted freely to Asti, and it appears among the goods dowered to Valentina Visconti. Split from Cossombrato, it turned autonomous in 1619, though the Pelletta still counted it theirs: the crowned lion on its arms is their own.

The parish church of the Madonna del Carmine, documented from the late sixteenth century, took its present form in the later eighteenth to a design by the Turin architect Giovanni Battista Pagano. Behind the high altar hangs a Black Madonna of Guadalupe, brought from New Mexico in 1752 by Giovanni Battista Codiga, who had made his fortune overseas.
