Feast of San Grato
📅 Every year, on 7 September
On 7 September Soglio, a municipality of 160 inhabitants in the province of Asti, celebrates its patron San Grato.
Soglio, a small municipality in the Val Rilate hills north-west of Asti, is the last of a series of settlements: it moved here in the fifteenth century from two older sites, Croce and San Giorgio, the first documented as early as 1122. The name probably comes from Sollius, a Gallo-Latin personal name. At the centre, on higher ground, stands the medieval castle, remodelled in the mid-eighteenth century and still ringed by the two roads that followed the ricetto walls.
Its two parish churches, San Pietro and San Giorgio, recorded as ecclesia Sancti Georgii de Cruce in the fourteenth-century register of the Asti churches, were in poor shape by the sixteenth century, so services moved to the oratory of San Benedetto: for two centuries it served as the parish church without being one, and from 1828 the present church rose on its site, taking the titles of both. The arms carry a golden radiant sun and the motto Sub regimine tuo.
