Viale

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 261 · Postal code: 14010

Viale is a village of the Basso Monferrato, in the province of Asti; the houses follow a road that climbs and widens into the square, with steps up to the castle. Its arms show three green cypresses on gold between the capital letters C and V, and in the red chief a crowned golden barbel, emblem of the Balbiano counts, lords of the place.

The castle, medieval in origin, was destroyed and rebuilt more than once in the wars of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. From the Balbiano it passed in the mid-nineteenth century to the Caisotti di Chiusano, who restored and enlarged it; in 1918 the municipality bought it and still has its offices there. Marble arms remain on the north front; the council chamber keeps three sixteenth-century portraits, two of the Balbiano and one of Duke Charles Emmanuel I. The parish church dates from 1710.
