Roccaverano

Province: Asti · Region: Piedmont · Population: 447 · Postal code: 14050

Roccaverano is the highest municipality of the Asti province. Its name may come from Rocha Uverani, an old written form tied to the nearby Ovrano stream; an imperial diploma of Otto I gives instead Ruspaverano. A goat cheese carries the same name; Garbaoli is known for its small rounds.

In 1209 Ottone Del Carretto handed the village to the commune of Asti, and the Codex Astensis draws its castle in a miniature. In 1633 Neapolitan troops bound for Alsace sacked the place. Of the castle only the main front survives, with three pointed-arch mullioned windows and the arrow slits, plus the round tower with three tiers of corbelled arches.
