Feast of San Bartolomeo
📅 Every year, on 24 August
On 24 August San Giorgio Scarampi, a municipality of 131 inhabitants in the province of Asti, celebrates its patron San Bartolomeo the apostle.
San Giorgio Scarampi looks down over the Val Bormida and owes its name to the Scarampi, bankers from Asti who held lands hereabouts. The tower that marks the village, though, was raised by the Asinari, another Asti family who had succeeded them: above the door still runs the inscription saying that in the year of the Lord 1323 this castle was built for the lords Alessandro and Bonifacio Asinari of Asti.
The tower stands on a crag above the Tatorba stream, its foundations laid on an embankment: square in plan, six floors, some with barrel vaults, others with floors once of timber, and a terrace on top that used to be battlemented. The curtain wall of the keep survives around it. The entrance was not at ground level but on the third floor, on a walkway reached by drawbridge or wooden ladder, and it faces north-west, towards Bubbio, out of sight of neighbouring Roccaverano and Cortemilia.
