Perletto

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 305 · Postal code: 12070

Perletto is the only comune of the province of Cuneo in the diocese of Acqui; of its six neighbouring municipalities, four lie in the province of Asti. Benedictines of the abbey of San Quintino di Spigno held land here from the late tenth century, when the territory already lay in the Acqui diocese. The settlement is loose: most people live scattered over the countryside rather than in the village.

A medieval tower of cut stone, roughly thirteenth-century, stands in the middle of the village, with underground passages and, on its outer faces, incised marks naming the craftsman. Almost nothing is left of the castle around it, though the eighteenth-century parish church of San Vittore is still welded to it by its facade; the bell tower is stone, with courses of old brick. In 1595 the fief became an independent marquisate for Carlo Guglielmo Valperga.
