Capriglio lies in the hills around Asti, scattered across four settlements — Bacolla, Cecca, Agagliate and Serra — and bordering Castelnuovo Don Bosco. Where the parish church and the kindergarten now stand there was once a castle: nothing of it survives, but its underground passages still run beneath the middle of the village. The church was dedicated first to Saint Martin and later to the Nativity of Mary; the town's arms stayed agricultural, with three gold six-petalled roses on red and a purple bunch of grapes, still on the vine with two green leaves, on silver.
On the first of April 1788, in the hamlet of Cecca, Margherita Occhiena was born to a peasant family; she would be known as Mamma Margherita. Baptised the same day in the parish church, she lived here until her marriage in 1812 to Francesco Bosco, a widower with a small son, and then moved to the Becchi. The second child of that marriage was Giovanni Bosco, founder of the Salesians. The Holy See has declared her venerable; her birthplace at Cecca still stands, now privately owned.
