Donato

Province: Biella · Region: Piedmont · Population: 719 · Postal code: 13893

Donato lies at the western end of the Biellese and rises to 2,371 metres at the Colma di Mombarone; the Viona stream rises on its southern side and long divides Biellese from Canavese. The name is Roman and marks an old settlement. Around 1150 the bishop of Vercelli, Uguccione, bought the place for his church, along with Zumaglia, Netro and Verrua.

In 1706 French troops destroyed nearly the whole village. The coat of arms is that of the de Rege, its last lords: chequy argent and azure with a red rose. Above the meadow stands the parish church of Saints Peter and Paul, with an arcaded porch and two bell towers, one with the clock.
