Chiaverano

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 2,106 · Postal code: 10010

On the rocky spur east of the village stood the borgo of Sessano, abandoned perhaps after a landslide: the Romanesque church of Santo Stefano is all that is left. In the centre stands the parish church of San Silvestro with its tall tower.

Inside is the organ Giovanni Bruna built between 1793 and 1796, one of the few great eighteenth-century instruments left in Italy; to restore it the villagers founded an association of their own. During the war fifteen Jewish refugees from the Balkans were interned here, a little girl among them: after the eighth of September, with the German occupation, they all fled and all survived, most reaching Switzerland.
