Andrate

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 512 · Postal code: 10010

Andrate sits on top of the Serra d'Ivrea, above the morainic amphitheatre that runs to the Monferrato. Its name is thought to be Celtic: and, “end”, plus art, “land” — borderland. The ridge and the Viona torrent did mark the edge of Salassi country.

The earliest documents, of the early thirteenth century, find it under the bishops of Ivrea, whose mitre is still on the coat of arms. In 1365 a diploma of Charles IV handed it to the Savoy; in 1410 bishop Bonifacio della Torre gave it its own statute. Santa Maria was rebuilt in the eighteenth century; its Romanesque bell tower is late eleventh century, with openings from arrow slits to triple windows.
