Feast of Saints Fabian and Sebastian
📅 Every year, on 20 January
On 20 January Zumaglia celebrates its patrons Saints Fabian and Sebastian, after whom the parish church is named; the Castello di Zumaglia stands in the municipality.
Zumaglia sits on the Biella hills, on a saddle between the Chiebbia and Riasco basins, and comes last in the alphabetical list of Piedmont's municipalities. It gave its name to the brich above it, the knoll where the castle stands, and for centuries its story was the castle's: first recorded in the tenth century, among imperial donations to the bishop of Vercelli.
Running the castle through castellans appointed by the ruling house proved uneconomic, and in 1416 Zumaglia was downgraded to a fief. The stronghold was almost wholly destroyed in 1556 and rebuilt only four centuries later, in 1937: the arcaded wall and the battlemented tower still crown the brich.
