Sala Biellese

Province: Biella · Region: Piedmont · Population: 627 · Postal code: 13884

Sala Biellese lies on the morainic slope of the Ivrea amphitheatre, in the strip usually counted as Biellese rather than Canavese. The village still lived by hand weaving, kept going mainly by its women, when in 1896 the government tried to tax it as an industrial activity. The weavers rose up, the carabinieri fired into the crowd and four people died.

In January 1945 Radio Libertà, dismantled at Callabiana under enemy pressure, was moved here: the only partisan station speaking to civilians, it went back on air and carried on past the Liberation. The bell tower stands alone on the grass, with a clock, a sundial and bells in the arches.
