Miagliano

Province: Biella · Region: Piedmont · Population: 638 · Postal code: 13816

Miagliano is the smallest comune in northern Italy by area, second smallest in the country: no mountain hamlets, only the right bank of the Cervo. It governed itself from the mid thirteenth century but became a parish only in 1779, unlike its neighbours. Its church of Sant'Antonio Abate keeps an organ by Giovanni Bruna, a local man.

The rest is the doing of the Poma brothers, cotton spinners from Zumaglia. From 1865 the Biellese's first workers' village grew around their mill: lodgings for unmarried women workers, tenement blocks, a kitchen, a nursery, a clinic. Early in the twentieth century the firm employed three thousand. In 1929 Andorno swallowed the village; autonomy returned with the end of Fascism.
