Andorno Micca

Province: Biella · Region: Piedmont · Population: 3,407 · Postal code: 13811

The town carries the name of Pietro Micca, the hero of the siege of Turin of 1706, but the house held to be his birthplace stands in Sagliano Micca: for a time Sagliano was a hamlet of Andorno, and the name stayed on afterwards.

The place belonged to the bishop of Vercelli, and in 1371 the people of Andorno, fed up with the demands of Giovanni Fieschi, stormed the castle on the height, imprisoned the bishop and took the goods he kept there. Breaking away from Biella then took a century of petitions: in 1561 Emanuele Filiberto granted them a community of their own, with an elected podestà and a weekly market.
