The name comes from the Latin Pectinennum, or perhaps Petinaneum, and points to the combs that carded wool. Until 1623 the village belonged to the district of Bioglio; that year Charles Emmanuel I made it a commune of its own. The centre sits on the slopes of Cima Sant'Eurosia, and for its view they call it the Balcony of the Biellese.
Wool, worked at home at first, turned into industry in 1851, when Bernardo Bellia opened his knitwear mill here. On the hill south of the village the Bellia had built the house now called Villa Piazzo; behind its roof stands the cedar of Lebanon of the park, where three giant sequoias grow too.
