Veglio

Province: Biella · Region: Piedmont · Population: 566 · Postal code: 13824

The name Veglio has no certain explanation; the most accepted reading takes it from vegliare, to keep watch, for the sentinel position of the village above the Valle di Mosso, which catches the morning sun first. The territory runs down from the Valsessera ridge and includes a detached administrative island, the Alpe Montuccia, whose woods and pastures fall from the Monticchio to the Sessera.

In 1185 it was already noted as one of the largest and oldest cantons of Mosso Santa Maria, sharing one parish with it and with Mortigliengo; independence as a comune came only in 1742. On the Colmetto, north of the village, stand ruins read as anti-Dolcinian fortifications.
