Callabiana

Province: Biella · Region: Piedmont · Population: 149 · Postal code: 13821

Callabiana lies in the upper Strona di Mosso valley, near Biella; its hamlets line the sunny side of the Rio Soccasca, while a detached scrap of territory sits far off in the upper Valle Cervo, by the Colle della Mologna Piccola. Long tied to the fief of Andorno, the village broke away twice: first in church, when the bishop of Vercelli founded the parish of the Madonna degli Angeli in 1533, the building being decades older, then on paper, with the patents of civil separation of 1700.

The fief passed in the eighteenth century to the Nazari counts, whose three gold hunting horns still stand in the arms, below the silver cross of Savoy. From the hamlet of Trabbia, in December 1944, Radio Libertà went on air, the only partisan station of the Resistance addressing the public, not the units; in January 1945 it was dismantled and moved to Sala Biellese. Men emigrated to build abroad: the engineer Pietro Gibello-Socco worked on the Siberian railway and retired to Harbin, in Manchuria, where they called him the Biella nabob.
