Camandona

Province: Biella · Region: Piedmont · Population: 359 · Postal code: 13821

Camandona has no single centre: the town hall stands in the hamlet of Bianco, the borgate strung along the slope above the Strona di Mosso. The name may come from the Piedmontese Cà bandonà, abandoned house: the place was a summer pasture the herdsmen left empty in the bad season, though other explanations exist. Permanent settlement is documented from 1446.

It bought its separation from Bioglio: Charles Emmanuel I granted the patent against sixty-three gold scudi and a third, and the boundaries were drawn in 1627 after bitter argument. One strip of it lies detached, an administrative island in the Valsessera; the borgate of Pianezze, split among three comuni, came only in 1964.
