Piatto

Province: Biella · Region: Piedmont · Population: 547 · Postal code: 13844

The name has nothing to do with flat ground: Piatto is all hill and mountain, from 309 metres up to 1620. Piatlin was an apple variety of the Valle Elvo, and the village is named after it; the arms agree, with a silver cornucopia spilling fruit and three gold bees above.

Until 1624 Piatto was part of Bioglio; the fief, though, had belonged to the Avogadro di Quaregna since the Middle Ages, and they built a fortified house here. There is no single centre: twenty-five hamlets, and the town hall stands at Fretta. The parish church is plastered white, and its brick bell tower carries two sundials below the belfry.
