Feast of Saints Peter and Paul
📅 Every year, on 29 June
On 29 June Argentera, a municipality of 79 inhabitants in the province of Cuneo, celebrates Saints Peter and Paul, patrons of the main village; each hamlet then has its own patron.
Argentera lies at the head of the Valle Stura di Demonte, below the hairpins climbing to the Colle della Maddalena, and it is a scattered municipality: not one centre but a line of hamlets, with the town hall at Bersezio. The name points to mines once opened here for metals, silver among them, and the arms keep that memory: a silver field, a green bend, a black pickaxe set palewise. The Stemmario civico piemontese, though, reads the same figure as an alpenstock.
The parish was created on 12 March 1545, split from Bersezio's because in winter reaching San Lorenzo was too hard. In the nineteen-thirties Monsignor Riberi found in Sambuco's parish archive, inside a manuscript from the early sixteenth century, the words of the Nouvè: Christmas songs written here in Occitan, left without music until the sixties. Francesco Besucco, the shepherd boy taught by Don Bosco, whose life the saint wrote, is tied to the village too.
