Lisio

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 214 · Postal code: 12070

Lisio lies in the Mongia valley and its land never leaves the narrow valley the stream has cut. Nothing certain is known of the name's origin: one conjecture links it to lis, a term common to the Indo-European languages for something fluid and flat, and given the lie of the land it is thought to have meant a place where water runs level and slow. The castle was put up by the marquises of Ceva, who also moved the village from the diocese of Asti to that of Alba; the Savoy later dismantled it, and little survives but a stretch of curtain wall swallowed by another building.

There was a lead mine here, closed at the end of the seventeenth century, and in 1685 the village had its share of the unrest of the salt war that involved the Mondovì country. A century or so later Napoleon's Italian campaign left it looted by Napoleonic and Savoyard troops alike, with no record of a direct clash between the two armies. In 1929 the comune was abolished and merged into Viola, becoming independent again only in 1947; its arms, quartered red and blue, carry a plain cursive L in the centre.
