Scagnello

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 207 · Postal code: 12070

The first firm record of Scagnello is a family settlement: on 20 April 1241 the marquises of Ceva divided their property, and the land, until then the marquis Pagano's, went to the brothers Manuele and Giorgio, on condition that they seek investiture from the bishop of Alba. The shield holds both halves of that story: three red stools, the scagnelli that echo the village name, above the gold and black bands taken from the arms of Ceva.

Of the castle built in the twelfth century, which covered some eight thousand square metres and passed through lords all tied in some way to Ceva, only the tower is left, at 838 metres. The parish church of San Giovanni Battista looks recent, though it is first mentioned in the seventeenth century; it was enlarged in the nineteenth, and the front drawn by Bartolomeo Unia was never finished. A brick baroque doorway before it carries the date 1714.
