Bonvicino

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 107 · Postal code: 12060

Bonvicino is a village of the Alta Langa, in the province of Cuneo, and its name comes from the Latin bonus vicinus, the good neighbour: some read it as a record of excellent neighbourly relations. Local legend credits the villagers who, having survived the plague of 1630, are said to have rushed to help neighbouring Belvedere Langhe; but it does not hold, since the community already bore the name before the year one thousand. Another legend blames gullibility rather than solidarity for their name as good folk.

The only certain events go back to the Middle Ages, when the village passed from the marquises of Monferrato to the Visconti, who seized it by force in 1432; after that came only partitions and quarrels. The fief then belonged to the family of Domenico Belli, grand chancellor of Savoy, and to the Corte. The municipal arms carry the village's initial: a black letter B on silver, above a field banded in silver and black.
