Belvedere Langhe

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 370 · Postal code: 12060

Belvedere Langhe stands on a hilltop in the Alta Langa, and from there a stretch of the Alps is visible, from the Maritime Alps to Monte Rosa: the name says as much. The oldest documents naming the place, from 1162, call it de bellovidere; by 1197 the form had shortened to Belveer.

The castle lived off the same view: not a residence but a tower for lookout and defence, built in the fourteenth century. The French destroyed it in the wars of the seventeenth century, and only a few ruins remain. Near the cemetery, on a hill called the Castellazzo, excavations have brought to light the foundations of thick walls and a few skeletons.
