Somano

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 361 · Postal code: 12060

In the Alta Langa, Somano's castle has vanished twice. First in 1631, when most of it was destroyed; by the late fifteenth century the parish church of San Donato had already risen over the old castle church, turned slightly on its axis. Then in 1969, when the knoll it stood on was lowered by twenty metres; the town hall keeps its address on via Castello.

The parish holds an Avignon reliquary cross with a fragment of the Cross of Christ: how it reached the village is still unexplained. On the climb to the chapel of the Blessed Virgin of Mount Carmel, fourteen Via Crucis shrines went up in the eighteenth century; five are left, and only one keeps its original picture.
