Briga Alta

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 48 · Postal code: 18025

Briga Alta has a few dozen inhabitants, the second least populated municipality in Italy after Morterone and one of the very few with fewer than one resident per square kilometre. It is made of three hamlets: Piaggia, the council seat, Upega and Carnino. The territory comes in two separate pieces: to reach the other two from the town hall you must leave Piedmont, cross Liguria and climb the Colletta delle Salse.

The break has a date. Under the Paris treaties of 1947 Tenda and Briga Marittima, today La Brigue, went to France, while the upper part of the old municipality, towards the Tanaro basin, stayed Italian and became a municipality of its own, keeping the name Briga after the old one. The arms say the rest: the motto Fracta resurget, “broken, she shall rise again”, and, quartered, the arms of the Lascaris of Ventimiglia, once lords here, with a crowned double-headed eagle. Its southernmost point, on Monte Saccarello, is also the southernmost point of Piedmont.
