Triora

Province: Imperia · Region: Liguria · Population: 374 · Postal code: 18010

Between 1587 and 1589 Triora tried its witches: thirty-five women accused of having caused the famine, nineteen of whom were imprisoned in Genoa together with one man. Five died in prison and nine did not survive the torments at Triora and Badalucco; then the Holy Office stepped in and the sentences were reduced to penances and public abjurations. The records are in the State Archive of Genoa.

Much later, in the hamlet of Creppo, Francesco Moraldo kept two German Jewish children, of nine and eleven, hidden in his house throughout the occupation: their parents had been deported from Nice to Auschwitz. On 2 and 3 July 1944 the Germans set the village on fire. The population is 374.
