Cosio d'Arroscia

Province: Imperia · Region: Liguria · Population: 248 · Postal code: 18023

In 1957 a handful of artists and theorists met up here and founded the Situationist International: Guy Debord and Asger Jorn among them, in a village of the Ligurian Alps that today has 248 residents.

The village sits at 721 metres in the upper Arroscia valley, less than twenty kilometres from the French border. The bell tower of the Assunta oratory is a reworked Roman tower; of the Clavesana castle, pulled down by the valley people in revolt, nothing survives.
