Montegrosso Pian Latte

Province: Imperia · Region: Liguria · Population: 121 · Postal code: 18025

On the side of the parish church of San Biagio there is a doorway whose lintel was carved in 1435 by the stonecutters of Cenova: San Biagio, an angel and the Agnus Dei. It is what survives of the church before the eighteenth century rebuilt it in baroque.

Montegrosso Pian Latte has 121 residents on a terrace at 721 metres, under Monte Monega. The village has a chestnut museum, with a wooden threshing machine from the nineteen forties; higher up, at Case Fascei, the shepherds' stone huts are still standing.

Fun facts about Montegrosso Pian Latte

The patron is Saint Blaise, bishop and martyr, and the feast falls on 3 February; the parish church in the old centre carries his name. Begun between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, it was rebuilt in baroque forms towards the eighteenth on a design by Giacomo Filippo Marvaldi, but the side doorway with its 1435 lintel, carved by the stonecutters of Cenova, stayed where it was.

Above the village, at thirteen hundred metres, the hamlet of Case Fascei still has its tecci — the stone huts — and the summer pastures the shepherds used; today they serve almost only tourism. From there the paths climb to the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri by way of Monte Monega and the Garezzo pass.
