Feast of Saint Maurice and Saint Pius V
📅 Every year, on 22 September
On 22 September Roccaforte Mondovì celebrates its patrons Saint Maurice and Saint Pius V; the village has its own dialect, called kje, blending Occitan and Gallo-Romance traits.
The name may come from a large fortified site with heavy walls and deep channels, or from the castle that stood on the height, of which ruins remain: tradition credits it to the emperor Hadrian. Just outside the centre, the pieve of San Maurizio keeps Romanesque-Byzantine fresco cycles, among the few surviving.
At the end of the seventeenth century came the salt wars, the first in 1680 and the second in 1699, and with them a crisis that dragged banditry, famine and epidemics with it. The commune is Occitan territory, and the Ellero valley holds five endemic species and karst features, among them lake Biecai, which geologists read as a tectonic-karst depression.
