Villanova Mondovì

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 5,769 · Postal code: 12089

The village ran away from the river. The first settlement stood at San Nicolao, but the Ellero changed course and ended up running under and inside the walls of the old parish church; the chapel raised on the ruins was levelled by another flood in 1300. The people then moved up to the hill of Villavecchia, where a small church already stood.

Independence had to be won more than once. Rewarded in the sixteenth century for its loyalty to Savoy with separation from Mondovì, it was besieged by the French, sacked and burned in 1554 and forced back together with the city; separation came again in the seventeenth century, and the autonomous comune only in 1698.
