Genola

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 2,596 · Postal code: 12040

Genola was split in fifths between two cities: in 1796 the three fifths under Savigliano were joined to that city's territory and land register. Fossano wanted the same rights over the other two fifths, and it was precisely that quarrel that gave the village its chance to ask the French government to become a comune.

On 11 January 1808 it was Napoleon himself who signed the decree making Genola an autonomous comune. The accounts stayed open for decades, though: with Fossano an agreement came quickly, while the suits with Savigliano ended only in 1855, when the Court of Appeal of Turin ordered Genola to pay sixty-five thousand lire in equalisation.
