Salmour

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 706 · Postal code: 12040

The name Salmour comes from Sarmatorium, a place an imperial grant gave to the bishop of Asti in 901; the lords of Sarmatorio took their name from it. In 1940 the comune was Italianised into Salmore, and in 1951 it took the old name back.

In the seventeenth century the fief passed to the Gabaleone of Andezeno. Widowed, countess Caterina di Balbiano married a margrave of Brandenburg-Schwedt, half-brother of the first king of Prussia; the courts of Turin, Berlin and Vienna and the Roman Curia were drawn into a diplomatic tangle, and the margrave died the same year. The arms carry a tower and a rampant lion under a count's crown.
