On 12 September Marene celebrates the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary; the parish church bears the same title.
The first certain record is the act by which, in 1028, Abellonio and Amaltruda di Sarmatorio founded the monastery of San Pietro at Savigliano: among the properties listed is Marenis, together with a crowd of small comuni of the Cuneo country, half of which no longer exist.
In 1629 the plague carried off more than half the inhabitants. Then, in 1690, the local lords Giacomo and Stefano Turchi took it into their heads to free Piedmont from Savoy: the secession failed and reprisals fell on the town, but in the end Marene came out of it with the standing of a community separate from Savigliano, which is to say with its autonomy.
