The civic theatre of Savigliano stands where the lazaretto had been for a hundred and thirty years, from 1579 to 1709. Opened in 1836 with an opera by Donizetti, it carries the name of two sisters from Savigliano who played the violin, Teresa and Maria Milanollo; the curtain, painted by Pietro Ayres, shows Apollo and the nine Muses on Parnassus.
The name comes from the Latin Salvianum, and the town appears as villa saviliani in an imperial document of 981. It was a fortress town until the walls came down at the beginning of the eighteenth century, and with them went its rank. Giovanni Schiaparelli, the astronomer of the canals of Mars, was born here. There are 20,935 residents.

Savigliano celebrates Saint Sebastian on 19 August; since 1986 the Milanollo choir has organised the International Choral Singing Review every June, in collaboration with the town administration.
