Ostana

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 81 · Postal code: 12030

Ostana lies on the sunny side of the Valle Po, facing the north and east walls of Monviso, and it is not one settlement but ten hamlets — Sant'Antonio, La Villa, San Bernardo, Serre, Miridò and the rest — scattered across the slope. It is an Occitan-speaking municipality, its name written Ostana or Oustana depending on the spelling, and it belongs to the list of the borghi più belli d'Italia.

On the night of 12 October 1944 a Liberator bomber of the South African Air Force, flying supplies to partisan units in the area, came down on the mountains around the village, killing all eight British and South African crewmen. In October 2000, with their descendants present, a plaque remembering them was set into the town hall wall. Early each June Ostana hosts the Premio Ostana - Scritture in Lingua Madre, for authors working in a minority language: writers in Friulian and Sardinian have come, and in Basque, Kurdish, Maori, Yoruba and Tibetan.
