Paesana

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 2,868 · Postal code: 12034

The town lies astride the Po, in two boroughs: Santa Margherita on the right bank and Santa Maria on the left. Of the castle that once rose above the hamlet of Erasca only bits of the foundations are left: the French destroyed it in 1585.

In the sixteenth century the ideas of the Reformation reached here from the Pellice and Chisone valleys, carried by the Waldensians, and Paesana became an important centre of them. Between 1510 and 1513 the marchioness of Saluzzo, Margherita di Foix-Candale, led a long series of repressions against four hamlets — Bioletto, Bietonetto, Croesio and Pratoguglielmo — which still bear names of Waldensian origin.
