Barge

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 7,861 · Postal code: 12032

Barge lies in a basin at the foot of monte Bracco and monte Medìa, under the Cottian Alps and within sight of Monviso. The name comes from barga, an old word whose meaning is disputed: to some it means shelter, to others it goes back to a root meaning raised ground.

The first document that names it is from 1001, a diploma of Otto III; but what shows how much it counted is the Romanesque bell tower of San Giovanni Battista, the largest parish bell tower over a very wide area already in the first quarter of the eleventh century. On the summits of the two mountains survive ancient rock engravings, whose culture is unknown.
