Oncino

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 82 · Postal code: 12030

Oncino lies in a side valley on the right bank of the Valle Po, along the Lenta torrent; its land is all mountain, up to the summit of Monviso. The parish church of Santo Stefano stands on the site of the Saluzzo castle: with the castle gone and an avalanche having destroyed the earlier church, the villagers built there instead. The deed of sale between the Saluzzo and the community dates from 1655; later work uncovered the walls that once divided the castle halls, joined into the nave.

Above the village, by the Alpetto lake, the Italian Alpine Club built its first shelter in 1866: two rooms, one with a stove and a table, the other with plank bunks and straw. It served Monviso climbers from this side until the roomier Quintino Sella refuge replaced it, and now holds a museum on early Italian mountaineering. The chapel of the Madonna del Bel Fò recalls an apparition of the Virgin to a shepherd girl on a beech. In a century the population has fallen to a twentieth.
