Rorà

Province: Turin · Region: Piedmont · Population: 255 · Postal code: 10060

The name transcribes the village's old name, oak wood, from rou, oak, after the woods that once covered this valley on the right bank of the Pellice. The arms confirm it with an acorn and two oak leaves, beside a mallet and a bac, the quarryman's chisel: iron was mined here, limestone was burnt for lime, and later Luserna stone was worked. The silver and red bands come from the counts of Luserna, lords of the place before the community freed itself; in the seventeenth century it was called the Magnifica Comunità di Rorata.

Rorà belongs to the Waldensian valleys. In 1655 troops invaded the valley and the village was defended by Giosuè Gianavello and his men. From 1943 five Jewish families from Turin lived here under false names, twenty-one people in a village of about two hundred: all survived, and the municipality received the bronze medal for civil merit. Among them was the sculptor Roberto Terracini, who went on drawing and signed himself Ferraguti.
