Castino

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 500 · Postal code: 12050

Castino stands on a ridge between the Bormida di Millesimo and Belbo valleys, with the village at the edge of its territory, close to Cossano Belbo but not bordering it: a spur of Rocchetta Belbo cuts in. The name is unexplained: proposals point to a Roman official surnamed Castus, to castrinum, «small camp», to old chestnut woods.

Hamlets lie on both banks of the Belbo: San Bovo got its own parish in 1905, and Beppe Fenoglio set much of La malora at the Pavaglione farm. On a grassy crest outside the village, the church of San Rocco opens its stone front into a porch, the carved rose window in shadow.
