In a register of courts dating from the mid tenth century Revello appears as Curtis Regia. Hence the idea that it grew out of a Roman estate left in the hands of the state's quaestors: curtis was the name the Lombards gave to the portions they demanded from the defeated. Bricks, ceramics and inscriptions found near the chapel of San Biagio support it.

At the mouth of the Po valley, Revello was a trading passage towards the lands beyond the Alps, and the marquis Ludovico II and Giovanna del Monferrato made it their favourite seat. In 1642 the castle was destroyed and the town lost all strategic weight. In 1797 the bread revolt began here, remembered as the moti di Revello.
