Rifreddo

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 1,072 · Postal code: 12030

The name comes from a stream off the Mombracco, the Rio Freddo, and the coat of arms repeats it: the town hall on a red field, set on green ground that the water crosses. As Rivus Frigidus the place first appears in 1075, in a deed of gift by the marchioness Adelaide of Susa.

In 1219 Agnese, daughter of Manfredi II, marquis of Saluzzo, founded here the Cistercian nunnery of Santa Maria della Stella: she was its first prioress and lady of Rifreddo, and the house held jurisdiction over Rifreddo and Gambasca and tithes throughout the Po valley. The comune still keeps the records of a witch trial held there in 1495.
