Roman historians told that Hannibal, come down into Italy, reached the top of a low mountain and from there, seeing the plain open before him, stretched out his arm and showed his men the way: Ecce viae. That mountain was taken to be the Mombracco, and the borgo at its foot was called Enviis. Whether Hannibal really passed here is another matter: the Montgenèvre, lower and easier, is now preferred.

Pliny the Elder wrote that the Po, having come down the slopes of Monviso, hides in underground channels and reappears further down in the country of the Vibii. It can still be seen: hereabouts the Po is little more than a torrent, and in dry seasons its bed stays empty.
