Gambasca

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 408 · Postal code: 12030

Gambasca lies on the right bank of the Po, facing Monbracco, the last spur of Monviso above the Saluzzo plain. The land passed to the nuns of Rifreddo, whose abbess bore the title of Countess of Gambasca: in 1434 one of them, Mercia de' Pugneti, granted the statutes to the lands of Gambasca and Rifreddo.

The parish church of San Sebastiano stands at the village centre, built as a chapel in 1492 and consecrated by the bishop of Turin in 1497: a plain front under wide eaves, the dedication stone over the door, and behind it the bell tower with its clock and onion dome. Uphill and downhill the old hamlets are nearly all empty.
