Roburent

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 513 · Postal code: 12080

The name has no settled origin. The likeliest explanation traces it to the stream in the valley, the Roburentello, and is backed by a notarial document of 1118. The first form was probably Rivo Bruzenti, worn through Rivobruzzente and Rioburente into Roburent.

In the middle of the village stands the watchtower they call la Saracena, all that is left of a castle raised in the eleventh century against Saracen raids; just beyond it lies the parish church of San Siro, designed by Francesco Gallo. Under the Nazi-Fascist occupation the people of Roburent sheltered many Jews struck by the racial laws, and the comune holds a bronze medal for civil merit.
