Feast of Saint James
📅 Every year, on 25 July
On 25 July Monasterolo Casotto, a municipality of 101 inhabitants in the province of Cuneo, celebrates its patron Saint James (San Giacomo).
Monasterolo Casotto is all mountain ground, split between two hamlets, Sottana below and Soprana higher up. The name comes from a house of Benedictine monks who settled here around the year one thousand, though a nunnery tied to Pogliola di Morozzo already stood here in Lombard times. The rest of the name dates from 1862, when a royal decree let the municipalities of the province of Cuneo rename themselves: Monasterolo took that of the Casotto torrent.
Above Soprana stands the sanctuary of San Colombano, which appears on the town's arms: in the Monregalese valleys the Irish monk was shown as a Roman soldier, and outside it survives the arbi, a hollowed stone said to gather an oil that healed children's skin complaints. The two hamlets long had separate parishes; in the early twentieth century one church went up halfway between them, still keeping San Bernardo's bell. From 1928 to 1947 the comune was merged into San Michele Mondovì.
