Torre Mondovì

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 494 · Postal code: 12080

In the local dialect the village is simply Tor, and a tower is what it carries on its shield: silver, with square Guelph merlons, drawn from the corner so two faces show, on a low green hill against blue. Roman remains have turned up, but the earliest known document is from 1159, a donation deed to the bishop of Asti. The tie held: feudal lords changed, the jurisdiction stayed Astigian.

The rest is a story of workshops. In the nineteenth century Torre had a foundry and a glassworks making bottles; the glassworks site later became a paper mill, and a small paper industry remains on the plain of San Gottardo.
