Pamparato

Province: Cuneo · Region: Piedmont · Population: 329 · Postal code: 12087

The name comes from the Latin panis paratus, “bread ready”, probably a nod to soil fertile enough to make food easy to come by. A legend ties it instead to the Saracen raids: after besieging the village for months, the attackers caught a local dog eating a loaf of seasoned bread and left, sure that stores able to feed dogs that way were still ample. From their cry, Habent panem paratum, the name is said to derive, and the motto still runs under the town's shield, where a black dog holds a gold loaf in its mouth.

The first firm record is a document of 10 September 911, in which Pamparato marks a boundary; the village wrote its first statutes in 1391. The eighteenth-century castle of the Cordero marquises, built where an older stronghold stood, probably destroyed in the salt wars against Savoy, now houses the town hall. Pamparato holds a silver medal for the conduct of its people between 1943 and 1945: it sheltered partisans in private homes, suffered savage reprisals and lost a high number of lives.
